GRIFFIOEN EDGES PAULINE DÉROULÈDE.
Biot, June 14, 2023
Despite an intense match, France’s Pauline Déroulède lost to worldNo. 3 Jiske Griffioen, who shook off the rain to win 5-7 6-4 6-4.
Although she managed to edge Griffioen in the last games of the first set, Déroulède then conceded an impossible lead to her opponent despite a great battle right down to the last ball.
No miracle either for young Ksenia Chasteau, who lost 6-4 6-2 to Lucy Shuker. But the new generation hasn’t given up: 19-year-old Dutchwoman Lizzy De Greef is through to the quarter-finals thanks to her victory over Shiori Funamizu 6-2 6-1.
As for the world No.1s, it was a quiet day: Niels Vink, Diede De Groot and Tokito Oda won without difficulty and will also play in the quarter-finals, as will their lieutenants Sam Schröder, Yui Kamiji and Gustavo Fernandez.
