HOT DAY AND DRAMA AT THE FRENCH RIVIERA OPEN
Biot, 12 June 2024
There were twists and turns, and matches were fought out right down to the final points of the third set: it was a tense day at the French Riviera Open, with no fewer than four matches extremely closely contested in singles.
David Wagner (n°7, USA) in the Quads came from behind to beat Maximillian Laudan (n°22, GER) 1-6 6-0 7-5. As did Jiske Griffioen (n°3, NED), who put an end to the hopes of home favourite Pauline Déroulède (n°18, FRA) 6-3 2-6 6-1.
But it was the Chinese who put up the fiercest fight, with Ziying Wang (No.10, CHN) pushing Yui Kamiji (No.2, JAP) to the limit before succumbing 4-6 6-1 6-4. Zhenzhen Zhu (No.6, CHN) came from behind in the all-Chinese duel to beat Luoyao Guo (No.15, CHN) 7-6 1-6 7-5.
The favourites showed no signs of wavering in the Quads, with victories for Niels Vink and Guy Sasson, and in the Ladies, with Diede De Groot (over France’s Emmanuelle Mörch) and Aniek Van Koot prevailing.
