EMMANUELLE MÖRCH SURVIVES A THRILLER

Biot, Tuesday 11 June 2024

The first day of the French Riviera Open 2024 lived up to all its promises!

In the men’s draw, the favourites showed no signs of wavering. Tokito Oda (world no. 2, JAP), winner of Roland-Garros 2024, beat Ben Weekes (no. 44, AUS) 6-2 6-1. As for Alfie Hewett (world no. 1, GBR) and Gustavo Fernandez (world no. 3, ARG, reigning FRO champion), they swiftly disposed of the French Guilhem Laget, no. 23 and Gaetan Menguy, no. 28.

Outsiders Martin de la Puente, Gordon Reid and Joachim Gerard, as well as French No. 1 Stéphane Houdet, secured their spot in the next round with a 6-2 6-4 win over Kouhei Suzuki (No. 17, JAP).

The only surprise in this draw was the victory of young British Ben Bartram (No.24) over Takashi Sanada (No.10).

In the women’s draw, while we await the entry of the seeded players, Pauline Déroulède (n°18) and Emmanuelle Mörch (n°25) put in fine French performances. They beat Nalani Buob (No.24, SUI) and Macarena Cabrillana (No.19, CHI) after a hard-fought match for Mörch 6-3 2-6 6-4. However, Ksénia Chasteau, recent winner of the Roland Garros Juniors, and Charlotte Fairbank, who narrowly lost to Florencia Moreno (No.17, ARG) 7-5 7-5, couldn’t clinch the victory today.

Finally, in the Quads, young Frenchman Justin Michel opened the tournament against Israeli Shraga Weinberg (No.26). In his first FRO, however, he lost 6-3 7-5. As we await tomorrow’s favourites, Leandro Pena (No.13, BRE), Thomas Masaryk (No.14, SLO), Andrew Bogdanov (No.21, USA) and Gregory Slade (No.19, UK) all book their sport in the next round.
