FRENCH RIVIERA OPEN: TOP SEEDS HOLD THEIR GROUND ON DAY 2 AT THE MOURATOGLOU ACADEMY
Biot, 1 October 2025
Day 2 of the French Riviera Open 2025 delivered its share of tension and spectacle on the courts of the Mouratoglou Academy, as the world’s best wheelchair tennis players fought their way into the quarter-finals.
De La Puente survives Ter Hofte’s challenge
Top seed Martin De La Puente of Spain had to dig deep against 21-year-old Dutchman Maarten Ter Hofte, whom he was facing for the very first time. Ter Hofte seized his chance with fearless tennis, pushing De La Puente to the limit for two sets before eventually bowing to the Spaniard’s power and consistency: 6/4 6/7 6/1.
Spaargaren, Houdet and the seeds through
Elsewhere in the men’s draw, Dutch No.2 seed Ruben Spaargaren also had to show grit and patience to get past Brazil’s Daniel Rodrigues in straight but tight sets: 7/5 7/5. Frenchman Stéphane Houdet, the No.4 seed, produced a strong performance to defeat China’s Zhenxu Ji 7/6 6/1.
With these results, all the top seeds are safely through to the men’s quarter-finals – a line-up that promises high-level clashes ahead.
De Groot, Griffioen and Chasteau shine in women’s singles
In the women’s draw, defending champion and former world No.1 Diede De Groot looked untouchable once again, easing past Japan’s Manami Tanaka. De Groot continues her momentum after winning singles gold at the Sardinia Open.
Her compatriot Jiske Griffioen, along with France’s Ksénia Chasteau and the Netherlands’ Lizzy De Greef, all booked their places in the last eight with straight-set wins over Cabrillana, Maras and Guo.
Meanwhile, world No.4 Angelica Bernal had to work much harder. Pushed into a deciding set by France’s Pauline Déroulède, and forced indoors after the rain, Bernal used her experience to come through 2/6 6/0 6/2.
Doubles drama in the quad draw
No singles action in the quad draw today, but doubles provided plenty of excitement. Both Pena/Woodman and Cayulef/Lazarte triumphed in hard-fought battles decided in match tie-breaks.
What to watch tomorrow
Day 3 promises fireworks with several blockbuster clashes:
Japan’s No.8 seed Takuya Miki faces Britain’s Gordon Reid, the No.3 seed. France’s Stéphane Houdet (No.4) takes on Spain’s Daniel Caverzaschi (No.7).
And rising French star Ksénia Chasteau (No.3) will face world No.8 Diede De Groot for the very first time – a match that promises to be one of the highlights of the week.
