FRENCH RIVIERA OPEN: SPAARGAREN STUNS DE LA PUENTE AS FERNANDEZ SURVIVES A THRILLER

Biot, 2 October 2025

Day 3 of the French Riviera Open 2025 at the Mouratoglou Academy delivered breathtaking twists, high-intensity battles and plenty of drama, keeping the crowd on the edge of their seats.

Spaargaren topples the No.1 seed

The Netherlands’ Ruben Spaargaren pulled off the upset of the day by defeating Spain’s Martin De La Puente, the tournament’s top seed. After dominating the opening set, Spaargaren saw De La Puente fight back and build what looked like a decisive lead in the third (5-3). But the Dutchman showed incredible resilience, clawing back point after point to force a tie-break, which he sealed 7-4. Final score: 6/1 5/7 7/6 – Spaargaren’s seventh win over De La Puente in 24 meetings.

Miki shocks Reid, Houdet and Fernandez through

The other men’s quarter-finals were just as tense. Britain’s Gordon Reid, celebrating his birthday, suffered a shock defeat to Japan’s Takuya Miki, who beat him for the very first time in 23 encounters. Miki triumphed in a gruelling contest: 2/6 6/2 7/5.
Argentina’s Gustavo Fernandez also found himself in danger against American Casey Ratzlaff, but steadied the ship after a shaky start to win 3/6 6/3 6/1. Meanwhile, France’s Stéphane Houdet fought past Spain’s Daniel Caverzaschi, edging a tense three-setter 6/2 2/6 6/3 to keep French hopes alive.

Chasteau falls to De Groot, Kamiji digs deep

In the women’s draw, 19-year-old French hopeful Ksénia Chasteau could not find a way past world No.1 Diede De Groot. Playing the Dutch champion for the first time, Chasteau let slip a 5-2 lead in the opening set but showed great spirit to level the match at one set all. In the decider, fatigue caught up with her as De Groot completed the win, continuing her fine run after lifting the Sardinia title last week.
The day’s most gripping women’s contest came from Japan’s Yui Kamiji, who had to call on all her experience to overcome Dutch youngster Lizzy De Greef. In a nail-biting third-set tie-break, Kamiji held her nerve to prevail 2/6 6/4 7/6.
Elsewhere, the Netherlands’ Jiske Griffioen and Aniek Van Koot both secured solid straight-set wins over Angelica Bernal and Zhenzhen Zhu.

Quad doubles deliver drama and a new final

The spotlight was on doubles in the quad draw today – and it did not disappoint. Top seeds Heath Davidson and Andy Lapthorne had to save multiple match points before edging past Léandro Pena and teenage sensation Jin Woodman: 3/6 7/6 [14-12].
On the other side of the draw, Chile’s Francisco Cayulef and Argentina’s Gonzalo Lazarte upset Ahmet Kaplan and Sam Schröder with a 5/7 6/0 [10-5] victory to book their place in a surprise final.

Spotlight on the quad singles tomorrow

Day 4 will see the return of quad singles, with some intriguing quarter-final match-ups on the schedule – including a must-watch second rotation clash between Jin Woodman and Greg Slade.
